It is three habits: do not hang the square behind your furthest man, do not empty your back rank for no king, and when you must capture, pause one breath to pick the capture that does not donate a king-row. Everything else is endgame books you are not ready to misquote.

The hanging landing

A man is edible if an enemy can jump him onto an empty dark square. Before you move, look at that beyond-square. If you just emptied it, you plated dinner. If they just emptied it, take the dinner. This is 80% of beginner tactics. The other 20% is double jumps, which are the same idea chained. Chain later. Dinner now.

Play a slow game and say “beyond” out loud for three moves. You will sound unwell. You will hang fewer men. Unwell is temporary. Hung men are on the bar.

Back rank as a door

Your back rank is where they king. Leaving two men as a gate is a classic idea: they cannot step onto the king row for free. Classic ideas become prisons if those two men never move and you get outnumbered in the center. Doors should open when you are ready to run through. Doors that never open are a wall you built against yourself. Week one: keep some presence. Week four: learn when to break the gate to make your own king. Week four is not this paragraph. This paragraph is “do not sprint the back rank empty on move three because a video said develop.”

If they already have a king and your back rank is empty, you are in the endgame article early. Flee toward numbers, not toward the edge automatically. Edges trap kings too. Geometry is mean. Mean is the sport.

Trades

One-for-one is often fine. Two-for-one in your favor is why forced capture can feel like a gift. Two-for-one against you is why you pick the other jump. When the engine forces a capture, you still choose among captures if more than one exists. Choice is the strategy inside the force. People forget they had a choice because the toast said “must capture.” Must capture is not “must capture this one.” Scan. Then jump.

Do not trade into their king if you are trading your only articulated wing. Articulated means pieces that still have moves. Frozen wings look solid and are dead. Dead wings are a style, not a fortress.

Center without a religion

Central dark squares see more diagonals. More diagonals mean more jumps you can threaten and more jumps you must watch. Side squares see fewer. Sides are not “bad.” They are quieter. Quiet is useful when you are ahead and want fewer tactics. Quiet is death when you are behind and need a jump. If you are behind, you may need the noisy center. If you are ahead, you may sneak on the side. Ahead/behind is king count plus men plus who kings next. Count. Then pick noisy or quiet. Named “always take the center” is a chess import. Chess imports do not know draughts landings.

A single central man with no friends is noisy and edible. Friends first, then center. The order is the strategy. Reverse order is a scout on a plate.

Time as a strategy

In untimed, your strategy is the beyond-square. In blitz, your strategy is a default development plus “if highlight is jump, take a second longer than feels right.” The extra second is the whole beginner clock plan. Flagging with a winning king is a strategy failure. Winning kings do not score if the clock is zero. Zero is a legal loss. Legal losses count. Move.

If you have 3 seconds and a chain, finish the chain first, aesthetics later. Chains are forced. Aesthetics are not. Forced first is the only blitz theory that always applies.

What to ignore until you can see jumps

Ignore “the Old Fourteenth.” Ignore engine lines. Ignore trash talk about your rating. Ignore flying-king tricks if the room is American one-step kings. Look at the rule chip. Then look at the beyond-square. Then look at the back rank. Three looks is a beginner strategy. Four looks is greed. Greed is an opening book. Opening books will still be there when you stop hanging dinner. Dinner is tonight. Books are a weekend. Play tonight. Write one hanging-landing sentence in the history notes. That sentence is a coach that does not charge. Coaches that charge still start with the beyond-square. You can start there for free.

If a kid is learning, celebrate a refused hanging move more than a lucky king. Lucky kings happen. Refused hangings are skill. Skill is the only strategy this page will sell. The rest is variants, endgames, and not playing 1+0 until the thumb knows the wing exists.

[3

post-29","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-strategies
["GET
