TL;DR: Defense is filling beyond-squares, keeping a back-rank door until you mean to open it, and not parking two men on a diagonal that invites a chain. Traps are shapes that look like they win a man and lose two after the recapture. If a jump looks free, spend one breath on their next jump. Free is a marketing word. Marketing words are not landings.
The filled hole
Most traps start with an empty dark square behind a man. Fill it with a friend, or do not park the man. Friends on adjacent dark squares are a net. Nets are ugly. Ugly is defense. If you cannot fill, step the man off the diagonal. Stepping off is a quiet move. Quiet moves are legal when no capture is forced. When a capture is forced, you cannot “play defense” instead. You capture, then you live with the hole you made. Living is the next turn’s job. This turn is the force. Do not philosophize during a force. Philosophize after.
On a full board, holes on the wing are harder to see on a phone. Rotate. Defense is visibility. Visibility is a setting. Settings are strategy for people with thumbs.
Bait jumps
They offer a man. You take. They recapture two, or they king, or they open a double. The bait is the offered man. The hook is the landing you must sit on. If that landing is a plate, refuse—if the rules let you refuse. If they do not, you are in must-capture and the bait is a gun. Guns are why must-capture is a sharp sport. When you can refuse, refusing a single man to keep a king-row is adult. Adult is defense. Kid-mode takes every snack. Snacks are rated losses.
If two captures exist, the bait is often the pretty close one. The far one may be the defense. Scan. The beginner article said this. Defense is that paragraph with fear. Fear is useful. Panic is not. Panic takes the snack in 0.4 seconds. Fear takes 2 seconds. Two seconds is a defensive setting for the clock.
Back rank and the “safe” edge
Edges have fewer incoming diagonals. Fewer is not zero. A king can still walk. A man can still jump along the edge diagonal that exists. “Safe edge” is a chess rook-pawn story. Do not import it. Import geometry: count incoming dark lines. One line is quieter. Quieter is a place to hide a spare man, not a personality. Personality-on-the-edge is how you get stuck with no moves while they mop. Mops are kings. Kings laugh at edges that have no exit. Exits are empty dark squares. Keep one.
Back rank doors: two men as a gate. Gates fail if they can jump the gate. Gates are not magic. They are two bodies. Bodies can be jumped if holes exist. Fill the holes or accept that the gate is a suggestion. Suggestions are not walls. Walls are a myth. Myths lose endgames.
When to run versus when to clog
Behind on kings: clog the center so their king has fewer zigzags, or run a man to make a king of your own. Both are defense. The wrong one is the one that hangs a landing while you philosophize. Philosophize with counts: if they have two kings and you have a man on the seventh, running may be the only clock. If you have a gate and they have one king, clogging may hold a draw shape. Draw shapes are another article. This one says: pick run or clog, then look at beyond-squares. Dual plans in one ply are how traps land. Traps love hesitation. Hesitation is a hole with a name.
Ahead: do not hunt traps. Hunting is offense greed. Greed opens holes. Ahead-people should fill holes and trade when the trade removes their last counterplay. Trades are defense when you are ahead. They feel boring. Boring is the point. Points are wins. Wins are allowed to be boring. Exciting is for when you are behind. Behind is when you might take a bait on purpose. Purpose is a calculated hole. Calculated is not “I wanted a story.” Stories are replays. Replays of successful bait are rare. Replays of failed bait are the internet. Do not add to the internet tonight.
Trap checklist in five seconds
What do I sit on after the jump? Can they jump me from there? Can they jump me twice? Do I crown into a plate? Is there another capture that sits somewhere duller? Dull is a defensive landing. Then move. Five questions is the whole book for club nights. Books with names of traps are for people who already do this checklist. If you skip the checklist to use a name, you will name the trap after you fall in. Naming from the bottom is education. Education is fine. Winning is the checklist first. Checklist is not cowardice. Cowardice is flagging. Fill, scan, jump or don’t, clock. That is defense. The rest is poetry. Poetry is for after the gate holds.
Play a bot that loves to offer men. Practice refusing. Refusal muscle is a defensive opening. Openings that “control the center” without refusal still hang dinner. Dinner is the last article’s metaphor and this article’s villain. Villain is the empty beyond-square. Fill it. Then you can talk about traps in the chat. Chat after the move. Move during the clock. Clocks do not grade poetry.
