Tournament Rules vs Casual Online Play

Rated games use stricter clocks and touch-move conventions; casual lobbies allow takebacks by agreement.

TL;DR: Casual online play is chips, clocks you picked, takebacks maybe, chat, rematch. Tournament play is a published package: rating, no takeback, color assignment, delay/increment, anti-cheat, director. Do not bring kitchen takebacks into a rated Swiss. Do not bring Swiss silence into a friend’s unrated link. The room type is the first move, before move one.

What casual is for

Experiments, confirm-move tests, teaching, jokes, 15+10 while cooking. Casual is a lab. Labs may allow takeback. Labs may not rate. If it rates, it is not as casual as the button implied. Read. If a “casual” queue still subtracts rating, it is a tournament wearing sweatpants. Sweatpants are CSS. CSS is not a TD. The rating graph is the TD.

On a public board, assume no takeback unless the button exists. Existing buttons are law. Missing buttons are law too. Law is the room.

What tournament extras appear

Pairing, color balance, round times, tie-breaks, delay clocks (not just increment), headphones rules IRL, no-engine IRL. Online: no engine, no two boards, maybe move delay to reduce premove storms, maybe board-lock on disconnect with a timer. Disconnect timers are tournament organs. Organs should be in the event notes. Notes are a Sunday read. Playing round 1 without notes is casual energy in a Swiss. Swiss will not forgive. Forgiveness is a takeback. Takebacks are off.

If the event is “arena,” it is a different pairing. Arenas are not Swiss. Mixing the words in chat does not mix the pairing. Pairing is code. Code is the event page. Event pages are the chip’s older sibling. Read the sibling.

Clocks as a social contract

Casual 1+0 is a carnival. Tournament 1+0 is a statement. Statements should be published. If you need thinking, you need delay or more minutes. Asking for more minutes after pairing is a director conversation, not a chat poll. Polls are casual. Directors are not polls. If there is no director, there is no tournament, only a rated queue. Rated queues are a third thing. Third things still have no takeback. No takeback is the shared organ. Organ. Remember.

Increment vs delay: delay (Bronstein/simple) does not grow a bank the same way. Bank growth is increment. If you play shuttle endgames, delay vs increment changes whether you can sip. Sips were time management. Tournaments pick one. You do not pick at the board. Board is too late. Late is a loss in a shuttle you could have drawn with increment. Could-have is notes. Notes. Sunday.

Fair-play extras

Casual: mute and move. Tournament: report through the form, not a pile-on. Pile-ons are casual toxicity. Forms are tournament. If you use an engine in casual vs a bot, you are practicing a tool, not cheating a human. If you use an engine vs a human in rated, you are cheating. Cheating is a fair-play article. This one says: the room type changes the moral temperature because the opponent opted into a result that counts. Counts are ratings, norms, prizes, club standings. Standing is why takebacks died. Death of takebacks is respect. Respect is the tournament. Casual respect is different: you may grant a mouse-slip. May. Not must. Must is a house rule you write on a napkin. Napkins are casual TDs. Write them before game one of the friend-match. Friend-matches are tournaments of two. Two still deserve a napkin. Napkins prevent “but I thought.” Thoughts are not packages.

Spectators: casual streams are memes. Tournament streams may have delay. Delay is anti-cheat. If you shout moves in a chat that the player can see, you are a variant of engine. Engines are banned. You are banned. Banned is a tournament extra. Extra is the point of this page. Casual chat is noise. Tournament chat is a shooting hazard. Mute yourself if you cannot be quiet. Quiet is a rule. Rules are why people pay entry. Entry is a contract. Contracts are not 247 memes. Memes are after the round. After. Not during. During is the board, the clock, the package, the notes you read, the takeback that is not there, and the jump you must take, which is still the sport, in every room, including this one.

Appeals and screenshots

Casual: no appeals. Tournament: one screenshot of the board, clock, and toast, plus the round number. Support cannot use a cropped king. Cropped kings are a phone habit. Habit: screenshot the whole window. Whole windows include the event name. Event names are the package. Packages decide whether a disconnect was a win. Wins are not decided in Discord. Discord is casual. Casual cannot overturn a Swiss. Swiss is a director. Directors read forms. Forms are slow. Slow is why you should not stall the next round waiting for poetry. Play the next pairing unless the notes say pause. Notes. Again. Poetry after the last round. Last rounds still have jumps. Jumps do not pause for appeals. Appeals are parallel. Parallel is a form in another tab after you moved. After. You. Moved. That order is tournament hygiene. Hygiene is this extra. Extra is why casual and Swiss cannot share a brain. Brains should switch at the pairing screen. Screens are the first move of the round. Rounds are a contract. Contracts were the point. Point: different rooms, different verbs. Verbs: rematch versus pair. Pair is not rematch. Rematch is optional. Pair is not. Not is the tournament. Tournament. Sit. Read. Play. Then form, if you must, with a whole window, not a feeling.
