TL;DR: An account is a name, a history, maybe a rating. It is not required to learn a jump. If you register, use an email you control, a password that is not your other games, and a display name that is not your legal name if you stream. Tracking games is for spotting the same blunder twice. It is not a ledger of self-worth. If the site lets you play as guest, guest is a valid first week.
What history is good for
Replay one loss where you hung a landing square. That is a curriculum. Replaying twenty wins is a highlight reel. Highlight reels do not fix the wing jump you miss on mobile. Filter for losses, then for “I had a king and still lost.” King losses are endgame homework. Homework is one game, paused, you try to find the jump you missed before the replay shows it. If you cannot, then press play. Then write one sentence. One sentence per night is a tracker. A spreadsheet of W-L is not a tracker. It is a mood.
On Checkers Online 247, open the history or recent games panel after you have actually finished a game. Empty history is a guest, a filter, or a different login. Different login is the “I lost my rating” support ticket. You have two people. Merge them in your head: pick one email and stay.
Guest versus registered
Guest: fine vs bots, fine vs friends with a link, fragile if the tab dies. Registered: tab can die and you might resume. Might. Test resume once. If resume does not exist, registration still keeps your name. Names are for rematches. Rematches are how you learn one opponent’s habit of hanging the back rank. Habits are data. Data wants a stable name. Stable names want a password manager. Browser-remembered “password1” is how a sibling resigns your streak. Siblings are a threat model. Threat models are part of accounts. Cute.
OAuth (sign in with a giant company) is convenient and couples your checkers name to a real identity. If you do not want that, use a dedicated email. Dedicated email is a piece of privacy that looks like hassle. Hassle is smaller than a classroom seeing your other hobbies in the suggested accounts. Suggested accounts are a UI. UI is not destiny. Destiny is the email you type.
Ratings are a noisy thermometer
Provisional ratings swing. Swings are math, not persecution. Do not chase a number with 1+0 until you can see jumps in 5+3. The clock you cannot handle will print a rating you also cannot handle. Printouts of ratings belong in a drawer. Drawers are where thermometers go when you are not sick. You are not sick. You hung a piece. Hang fewer pieces. The number will follow like a bored dog. Chasing the dog is cardio, not checkers.
If the site has unrated, use it for experiments (new first move, confirm-move on). Rated is for the default you already trust. Mixing experiments into rated is how the history becomes unreadable. Unreadable history cannot teach. Unreadable is a tracking failure, not a skill failure.
What not to track
Do not screenshot every chat insult. Mute and move. Do not track opponent usernames for revenge queues if the site forbids hunting. Hunting is a fair-play issue. Fair play is another article. This one says: track your hanging landings, not their personality. Personality is not a square.
Do not export a CSV of games into a public drive with your email in the filename. Filenames leak. Leaks are an account problem that is not the server’s. The server kept the file. You published the path. Paths should be boring. Boring is privacy.
Notifications and “your move” mail
Correspondence-style play may email you. Email is a clock. Clocks in inboxes get lost. Use the on-site clock as truth. Disable mail if it makes you move from a notification preview of a board that is stale. Stale previews are the phone-banner problem again. Same bug, nicer stationery.
Turn off marketing mail. Keep “game ended” if you need it. Marketing mail is not tracking. It is a newsletter. Newsletters do not fix your back rank. Your back rank is in the replay. Open the replay. That is the only account feature this article actually loves. The rest is locks and names so the replay still belongs to you next Tuesday.
When to skip an account
School computer, shared iPad, five minutes: guest, no password, no rating dreams. When the bell rings, you leave. Leaving is the correct end of a guest game. If you care, take a photo of the board and continue at home as a puzzle. Puzzles do not need an account. Accounts need a future. No future, no form. Forms are how people type a real name into a checkers box because the label said “name.” The label meant display name. Display names can be “WingJump.” WingJump is a curriculum. Your legal name is not.
