King Promotion and Endgame Tactics

Kings move both directions—use them to shepherd enemy pieces into corners.

TL;DR: A king is a man who reached the far row and now walks backward (American) or may fly (other variants). Endgames are king count, remaining men, and whether the extra king can round up stragglers without hanging a landing. Promotion is not “you win.” Promotion is a new verb. If you crown into a double-jump that they take next, you bought a hat for a dead man.

How the crown happens on a server

The man must land on the king row. Passing over it during a jump may or may not crown mid-chain. If the site crowns immediately, the new king might continue with king-captures in variants that allow it. If the site waits until the chain ends, you stay a man until the animation finishes. Do not tap through the animation on a phone; you can skip a remaining jump or submit a empty click. Watch the icon. Icons are the rule applied.

If you expected a crown and got a still-man, you landed on the wrong row (your own back rank is not a crown) or the variant uses a different promotion rank. 8×8 American: their first row. Count rows. Counting is endgame.

King versus remaining men

A king behind their men is a mop. A king in front of a wall of men with no landing is a celebrity in a cage. Celebrity cages lose to a single well-timed jump. After you crown, ask: can they jump this king tomorrow? The beyond-square still exists for kings. Backward landings exist too. More verbs, more plates to check. Check twice, not zero because you felt promoted. Feelings are not a square.

Two kings versus one king is usually a win with time, unless the one king can hide in a double-corner (American classic). Double-corner hold-outs are why “I have two kings” is not resign-for-them. Learn the shape once: two adjacent dark squares in a corner that a lone king can shuttle. If you are the two, you need to break the shuttle, not checkmate like chess. There is no checkmate. There is blocking and jumping. Blocking a shuttle takes patience. Patience is endgame. Blitz is where shuttles steal flags. If the clock is low, you may need to simplify differently. Clock is a piece.

When not to crown this second

Sometimes a man on the seventh can wait one ply to avoid a recapture on the king row. Waiting is legal if no capture is forced elsewhere. If a capture is forced, you cannot wait. Force first. If you can wait, ask whether the crown square is a landing for them. Crowning onto a landing is a hat on a plate. Plates were the beginner article. They do not retire at 1800 rating. They get fancier hats.

On the board, if the highlight offers a jump to a non-crown square versus a quiet crown, you may not have a choice. When you do, pick the crown that still has a retreat. Retreat is a king word. Men do not retreat. That is why the hat matters.

Mop-up technique without a book

Keep your kings connected enough that they cannot be forked by a two-for-one. Forks in draughts are jump landings that hit two dreams. Dreams die on empty beyond-squares. Drive their remaining men toward the edge if that reduces their jumps, or toward each other if you can force a collapse. Edge is not always safe for them; it is sometimes safe for you. Calculate one jump deep at minimum. One jump is the endgame minimum wage. Zero jumps is a donation.

If you are behind a king, do not wander the center hoping. Hope is a man. Use the remaining men as a screen, or sacrifice a man to break a shuttle if the math works. Math is king count after the forced sequence. Count the sequence on your fingers. Fingers are legal in endgames. Engines are not required. Engines are a weekend.

Opposite-color feelings from chess

There are no opposite-colored bishops. All play is dark squares. That chess metaphor is banned. What you have is tempo: whose turn, and whether a waiting move exists. Waiting moves with kings are how you put them in zugzwang (they must step onto a landing). Zugzwang is a real draughts guest. If they must move a man that currently blocks a jump, you wait. If you must move and every move hangs, you are the guest. Guest is a loss with dignity. Dignity is better than a random jump that “might confuse.” Confusion is not a tactic against a king who can walk backward. Backward walks unconfuse.

Play one endgame vs a bot from a king-up position. Goal: no hung king. If you hang the extra king, the promotion was a costume. Costumes end. Then you know what to practice: beyond-squares for pieces that move in four diagonal directions instead of two. Four is not eight. There are still only dark squares. Four is enough to get dizzy. Dizzy is why endgames are slow. Slow is the tactic.
