Draw Rules and Stalemate Conditions

Threefold repetition, no capture rules, and agreement draws end deadlocked games fairly.

TL;DR: Online draws are engine packages: repetition, move-count, insufficient force, agreement. “Stalemate” from chess (no legal move but not captured) is not a one-to-one import; if you have no legal move you typically lose (blocked), unless the package says otherwise. Do not sit in a shuttle and assume a draw until the counter or the opponent agrees. Offer. Or play. Chat is not a TD.

Agreement is the universal draw

Offer draw. They accept or not. Spamming is mute. One offer when the king shuttle is obvious is polite. Polite is not a rule. Rules are the button. Buttons send. Chat “draw?” without a button may be ignored by the engine. Engine is the TD. TD does not read chat. Press the button if you want a real draw. Real draws go in history as draws. Chat draws go in nowhere.

On the interface, find draw before you need it. Finding at 0:04 is a time-management fail. Fails flag. Flags are losses, not draws. Losses do not become draws because you typed “pls.” Pls is not a package.

Repetition and shuttles

If the same position appears enough times with the same side to move, many servers draw. The counter may be hidden. Hidden counters are why you should not “play until they get bored” if you needed a draw for a tournament. Bored opponents may flag you instead. Flags are losses. If you need the draw, offer, or repeat until the package fires, or check if the UI shows “2/3.” Showing is kindness. Kindness is not guaranteed. Not guaranteed is why offers exist.

Double-corner shuttles in American walk-kings can hold a draw with two vs one. That is over-the-board lore. Online, the lore works only if the package does not have a “too many king moves without a capture” rule that kills you first. Kill-rules are 40-move cousins. Cousins differ. If the UI shows a move-count, watch it. If it does not, offer when the shuttle is established. Established is “they cannot break without hanging.” Cannot-break is a judgment. Judgments can be wrong. Offers are cheap. Wrong judgments are extra 20 moves toward a flag.

Blocked: no legal move

If it is your turn and you have no quiet move and no jump, you are blocked. Many draughts traditions: you lose. Chess stalemate: draw. Do not import stalemate. Importing is how you sit happily blocked and then lose and write “bug.” Bug is the package applying draughts. Draughts is the sport. If a casual room draws on block, that is a variant. Variant is the chip. Chip. Always chip.

Do not block yourself as a “clever draw” unless you know the package draws. Clever is a loss with a hat. Hats were kings. Dead kings with no move are losses. Losses are honest. Honest is better than a chess metaphor.

Insufficient material

Chess has K vs K draws. Draughts can still win with a king vs a trapped man, or fail to win two kings vs a shuttle. There is no simple “insufficient” that maps. Some servers draw when neither side has a capture possible for N moves. N is a number. Numbers are on the chip or in a FAQ. FAQs are a Sunday read. Sunday reads prevent Thursday chat-lawyers. Chat-lawyers do not change N. N is code. Code is the package.

If you have a king and they have a king and nothing else, you might still play. Play until offer, repetition, or a mistake. Mistakes are jumps. Jumps end the “insufficient” feeling. Feelings are not packages. Packages are counters and buttons. Use buttons.

Etiquette without folklore

Do not demand a draw because you were ahead on time. Time is a win condition for them if you flag. Flag is in the rules. Rules are not fairness-as-feeling. Feeling is you were winning. Winning is not a draw. If they flag, you win. If you flag, you lose. If you both have kings in a known draw shape, offer. If they refuse, play the package. Playing the package is sportsmanlike. Insulting them for refusing is not. Refusing is allowed. Allowed is a big country. You can still win on a mistake. Mistakes happen in shuttles. Shuttles are not automatic draws until the engine says so. Engines say so with a result screen. Result screens are the only folklore that matters. Wait for the screen, or the accept, or the flag. The rest is chat. Chat is optional. Optional is this article’s last rule: press draw if you mean draw; play if you mean play; do not mix the two in a speech at 0:07. Speeches flag. Flags are not draws. You knew. Press or play. Those are the verbs. Verbs end games. Games should end. Ending is a kindness. Kindness is a button or a jump or a flag, not a paragraph in chat about 40-move rules from a book the server did not read, because servers read code, and code is the package, and the package is the law of this tab, tonight.
